Programs from community arts education providers defy a one-size-fits-all description. Consider what the school division of Ballet Nouveau Colorado, a Denver professional dance company, has on its program schedule:

  • Beginner classes for all ages, including toddlers, older children, teens, and adults
  • Intermediate and advanced classes
  • Classes for pre-college students aiming for professional, university-level dance training
  • Performing opportunities for students at all levels, including advanced student trainees with the professional company
  • Programs designed especially for boys, older beginners, and adults

Across the country, providers in the community arts education field offer this same variety of options—all through direct instruction by professionals—for beginners and advanced students, for serious pre-professional training or pure enjoyment, for individuals and groups, for every age, background and ability. Community arts education providers reflect the passion of their teaching artists, staff, and students. Programs and classes are taught in neighborhood music schools, arts centers, arts education divisions of universities, theater companies, dance studios, and museums. Many programs also focus on positive aging, arts and wellness, youth development, or community building.

This Resource Center uses the following terms:

  • Program planning—Setting program goals and allocating activities, time, and resources to meet those goals.
  • Program development—Identifying the teaching strategies, timeframe, space, equipment, and materials that the program requires.
  • Program implementation—Providing arts instruction, evaluating student learning, and evaluating the program.

Program development is the bridge between program planning and program implementation.
